Tips for Effective CPAP Cleaning
CPAP therapy is fruitful when the CPAP machine is continuously used. However, similar to any other object which is used regularly, CPAP machines need regular cleaning and maintenance. Since a CPAP machine comprises multiple parts, it is recommendable that you make an effort to learn how to clean CPAP parts or replace every part.
Below are a few tips that can help you schedule regular cleaning of CPAP parts and replace the worn-out parts.
CPAP Tubes
- Even when not cleaning the parts of a CPAP machine, it is prudent to keep your CPAP machine out of their reach if you have pets at home. Pets, especially cats, can destroy the tubes with their claws or by biting into the CPAP tubes. Consider protecting the tubes by covering them within tube covers.
- Use a mild soap while cleaning the tubes. Try to avoid harsh detergents, chlorine, bleach, aromatic, or alcohol-based solutions while cleaning CPAP mask and tubing. Instead, use a small bottle cleaning brush to clean the tubes from the inside softly.
CPAP Filters
- Check how many filters your CPAP machine contains. Some machines come with two filters.
- Filters block the dust and over a short period to become dusty and dirty.
- The gray/black filter can be cleaned using a cleaning CPAP equipment or with a mild soap solution every week. These filters usually have a lifespan of up to a year. Cleaning them regularly improves their lifespan.
- The white filters are disposable and must be replaced. It is prudent to check the color of the white filters regularly. Discoloring, or start looking dirty, indicates that it is time to replace them. That should happen once in two months.
Masks
- Remember, the mask has several components, including the headgear, the frame, and the cushion.
- Among these components, the cushion is the most fragile and requires careful handling. It’s a good practice to clean the face before using the mask to avoid dirt and oil from damaging it. You can place the mask in a CPAP Cleaner for thorough elimination of dirt and oil.
- The cushion should be cleaned daily using a mild soap mix. Make sure you handle the cushion with care because it is delicate and may tear under pressure.
Note that it is worthwhile to consult with your CPAP machine providers when replacing any of the parts of your CPAP machine, or when getting a new CPAP device.
